Tree Stump Barn

At first glance this barn seems very typical, but step inside.  It was built on a farm located near the mouth of the Skagit River in northern Washington near LaConner. Being located in the river bottoms the soil was rich and desired for farming.  Dikes helped drain the land and farms started showing success in all kinds of crop production.  Gigantic tree and their enormous stumps slowed progress.  Stumps had to be removed.  In the instance of this barn, the stump remained, one less stump to remove!  Stepping inside one can see what remains.  The floor of the barn is part boards and part smoothed off stump.

The barn is used for the drying and storage of several types and colors of willow.  The owners cure the willow and weave beautiful baskets.
