Breaks-Myers Fourteen-Sided Barn
This distinctive "round" barn is located north of Crawfordsville, not far from Black Creek. An even older timber barn previously occupied this barn's location.
The barn's design and details are rare, but resemble some designs advertised in early agricultural newspapers published between 1910-1915. The construction date for this barn is 1912, finished in early 1913. The barn was built for the Wilbert Breaks family, but several years later the Worley Myers family purchased the farm.
The four gable dormers placed at the gambrel ridge of the roof set off this eye-pleasing barn. Adding to the visual uniqueness of this barn is the large fourteen-sided cupola with a window on each face.
Back at ground level, grain bins and animal stalls flank a central pass-through. Access to the multi-leveled hayloft is directly under the cupola. Looking up into the cupola reveals stunning and intricate construction, including hay rails and fork.
Descendants of Worley Myers live on this farm and maintain their treasured family barn. This plein air oil painting was completed in May 2015. The spring colors, the sculpted shadows and reflected light made this a challenging and rewarding painting, canvas size 12 x 24 inches.
