Gable Family Barn
This giant, two level shaped bath measures 100 feet x 100 feet x 100 feet, and was built in 1917. The side visible in the painting is the bottom of the U and is the front of the barn. Two interior silos were located on the right as one enters through the huge entry, visible in the painting. A cistern is located under this entry.
The gambrel roof over the second floor adds to its enormous hay and straw capacity. The lower level of the barn was initially used for dairy. Twenty stanchions were arranged in one arm of the U-shape, while a resting area for cattle was provided in the other arm. The floor in the resting area had solid cork inserts in the floors for cattle comfort. Two large trenches in the concrete floor are all that remain of the resting area.
Animals no longer use this barn, but its enormous size allows for storage of multiple farm tractors and other equipment.
July 2008, provided me with the time to spend painting this large and involved scene. I set up my plein air oil painting supplies very early; I wanted that morning light with its interesting cast shadows. The large barn requested a large canvas, 18 x 36 inches.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
