Hays-Thompson Barn
This eye-pleasing barn is perched on the crest of a hill near North Salem with a commanding view of the surrounding farmland.
Tobias Hays and his son Charles built this barn circa 1900. It was constructed with sawmill-cut heavy timbers with wooden pegs. The original metal roof still protects the interior hayloft and lower level.
Through its many years, the barn has seen numerous head of cattle come and go. In 1961, Dick Thompson started helping with the care of this barn and in 2000, he and his wife Clara purchased the farm and barn.
Kept in excellent condition by its current owners, enables the barn to be used for family and community functions and entertainment. Mr. Thompson invited me to this barn in the spring of 2015. He was aware of my barn-painting project and thought I would enjoy seeing his barn. He was right.
I set up my oil painting easel early in the morning to catch the strong light of late April. The reds in the shadows glowed with an intensity of color. The canvas size is 18 x 24 inches.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
