Marvin Evens Family Barn
This small bank barn is located on a steep rise overlooking Big Walnut Creek in central Indiana. Because of its placement, part of its stone foundation is surprisingly steep. The foundation stones are limestone and have been carefully dressed and placed.
Very little is known about this barn's history. The farm has passed through many owners. However, it was used during the 1950s and 1960s as a home for purebred Hampshire hogs owned by Elizabeth Rariden who, with her Father, was the editor and publisher of the Greencastle Daily Banner.
The barn has three levels; the upper level was used for hay. The lower two floors were used for cattle and hogs throughout its years of service. The barn has had little use since the mid-1960s.
I wanted to capture the steep foundation on this barn, which meant setting up my oil painting supplies in a rather precarious area. The glow of color in the shadows was an exciting element to seize. It was in October 2009 and I used a canvas 18 x 24 inches.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
