Molter Family Barn

The barn in this painting was built to replace an older dairy barn that, unfortunately, burned in 1947 due to lightning. For over fifty-five years this new barn presided over the John and Ola Molter farm. In 2003, no longer used for livestock and too small for modern machinery, the barn was in a state of disrepair and its destruction was imminent. John Molter Jr., who owned the farm at that time, sold the barn to Mike Molter.

Mike, John Jr's nephew and a grandson of the original owners, paid the price of one silver dollar. To this day it remains a matter of debate which participant "got the better of the trade."

The barn was dismantled and moved to the Mike Molter farm south of Lafayette. Upon its arrival, it was carefully reconstructed on a new foundation. The barn sits proudly as the centerpiece of the Molter's farm.

April in Indiana means changing weather and so it was in 2006 when I completed the plein air oil painting of this sweet barn. It had poured earlier in the day and was threatening to rain again. I was drawn to the delicate hues in the reflected light on the roof and under the roof's eave. I painted a 12 x 16 inch canvas.

All the barn paintings are for sale.  Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
