Speheger-Bierie-Gatto Square Barn
A rarity among barns is one that is truly square. This barn is one of those rare finds. At 50 x 50 feet, it features an identical gambrel hip roof on all four sides. Built by Allan Speheger in 1918, the heavy skeleton of the barn is sawmill cut and pegged. Additions and changes were made over time.
The handsome cupola is square and centered on the ridge and has windows on all four sides. It has its own hip roof topped by a lightning rod. Wagon doors, centered on the north and south sides, open to the light-filled pass-through. Placed off-center along the pass-through is a large wood-stave silo with metal compression bands.
The barn's ground level is divided into a variety of stalls and open areas. Haylofts cover most of the ground level. Multiple sliding doors and windows feature attractive arched sculpted trim. The barn is no longer in use.
Trees blocked the angle I wanted, so I waited until December 2013 after the leaves had fallen. The short afternoon light disappeared before I could finish my oil painting on location. Using the color notes placed on my painting, I finished the canvas in my studio. Size 18 x 30 inches.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
