Swarner Family Barn

This barn complex holds within its boundaries a much older and smaller barn. Built in 1886, the original barn, which was quite small at 24 x 42 feet, was built with hand-hewn and sawmill-cut timbers held in place with wooden pegs.

In the 1930s, ancestors of the current owner purchased the barn and farm. Additions and alterations occurred later as farming needs and trends changed. The front of the older barn faces south and is a gable-roofed, three-bay barn with a central pass-through. On this southern end the hood protects the large hay door that once opened into the hayloft.

While no longer used for animals, the owners cherish its important part in the family history. I set up my plein air oil painting supplies very early so that I was ready to capture the first light as it streamed across the barn. Cool hues were cast into the shadows, which added so much interest and delight to the painting process. It was September 2014 and my canvas size is 12 x 16 inches.

All the barn paintings are for sale.  Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
