Adams Family Barn

The Big Blue River in Henry County provided very fertile soil for this farm. The old gable-roofed bank barn held the bounty of hay and grain the land would provide for their animals.

The older barn has hand-hewn and pegged timbers. One of the barn beams is about 50 feet long, unspliced, and probably dates the barn to the late 1800s.

In the early 1900s, a newer gambrel-roofed milk barn was attached, creating a more modernized barn complex. A stunning and well-preserved glazed tile silo from this era still stands nearby and is shown in the painting. The barn is well-maintained, but it no longer hears the low bellow of the dairy cattle that would have been in this barn twice a day for milking.

I spent a day with this barn complex in June 2012. It was an adventure through time, one that I needed in order to do the barn justice on the canvas. I completed a studio oil painting in January 2013; the canvas size is 15 x 24 inches.

All the barn paintings are for sale.  Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
