Alvin Kuhns Family Barn
Many barns have lost their significance in today’s farming trends with the use of huge equipment and enormous animal confinements. However, this barn is still the center of activity on this bustling family farm.
This barn was built in 1915. The lower level is made of stone, which ties into the stone-edged earthen ramp leading to the large main entry door. Some of the timbers in the barn are hand-hewn. The barn is pegged and has been kept in excellent condition.
A gothic window placed near the peak of each gable end, is an unusual and eye-catching accent.
The upper level was once used for thrashing oats. It is now used for grain and hay storage. The lower level is home to the family's horses and ponies. A favorite family pony with her small cart attached adds a sense of scale to the scene.
The light danced upon the old vertical boards and foundation stones, surrounded by the fall colors. The many shades of red add dimension and interest to the scene. It was a lovely fall day, in 2010, to paint outside. I chose a canvas 16 x 20 inches and enjoyed creating an oil painting of the scene in front of me.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
