Alyce Sheehan Barn
Historically, this barn was referred to as the Brownsville Barn. Many locals still refer to the barn as such to this day. It is a very unusual barn with impressive history.
The construction date is unknown, but a conveyance of deed relating to the property is dated 1853. Regional farmers, wishing to reach the cattle market, would drive their cattle to the Brownsville Railroad Depot. The train would stop in Brownsville to pick up the livestock. Until the livestock was herded onto the train, they were held at this Brownsville barn and farm.
It is rare to find a historic barn with a monitor roof such as this one. It has louvered vents on both sides providing an excellent ventilation draft for drying hay and for animals below. The current owner purchased the barn in 2005 and immediately set about the badly needed restoration on this historically significant barn.
I set up my easel on a lower grade to capture the proud character of this barn, placed on its hilltop. The reflected hues into the cast shadows were stunning. Spending time with one's subject matter is important in capturing its delicate nuances and its character. It was September 2011 and I chose an 18 x 24 inch canvas for this oil painting.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
