Blasdel-Schmid Barn
In the early 1800s, around 1812, this farm was given to Lieutenant Colonel Jacob Blasdel as compensation for his service during the Revolutionary War. The farm is located above Tanners Creek and Highway 1. Blasdel built a beautiful stone home soon thereafter, placing it and his barn on a gentle hillside, a very picturesque setting. In the painting, the home is visible behind the barn.
The age of the barn is unknown, but it is presumed that this barn was built quite early. Scraped logs, logs with bark, plus hand-hewn and pegged sections speak of its early beginnings. Additions and changes were made over time.
Since the farm is located in an area of gently rolling hills, the barn's beautiful stone foundation is of varying heights. Other buildings on the farm also have the same eye-pleasing stone foundation.
In September 2010, I set up my plein air oil painting supplies to capture this scene. The stone foundations were catching light and also reflecting light and color. I wanted to capture their essence. It was a beautiful day; a gentle breeze and the buzz of insects kept me company. Canvas size is 12 x 24 inches.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
