Chellberg Homestead Farm Barn
This gable-rooted barn was built prior to 1885 in the style and form popular during the late 1800s. Wooden pegs secure the timber-frame construction.
Three generations of Chellbergs made their living here, starting with Anders and Johanna when they moved here from Sweden in 1863. They raised cash crops as well as livestock. The Chellbergs also had a dairy operation. They sold milk commercially after 1908 when the electric railroad opened its South Bend-to-Hammond route, providing fast transportation to urban markets.
This barn is part of an active homestead inside the boundaries of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. The homestead is often open for tours.
It was so quiet and peaceful the morning I set up to paint. I happened to position my easel under a Catalpa tree. Each breeze brought down a shower of fragrant blossoms onto my palette and me. It was June 2005. The light, colors and shadow shapes were captivating. I could not have ordered a better day to be outside oil painting. Canvas size is 12 x 16 inches.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
