Johnson Log Barn
Originally owned by another family named Johnson, this farm rests in the northwestern corner of Pike County. It is a very old farm, though early records of the farm are lost. Only the old log home and barn serve as remnants of those early days.
The smaller log structure is believed to be the original home. At some point, the home was abandoned and used as a stable.
The other log barn is a taller and larger building. It has a gable roof and appears to have had a loft at one time. Remnants of stables are visible inside. Over the years, additions and changes were made.
The logs on the old home and on the barn are impressive. Some measured as wide as twenty-six inches. Most logs are still tightly notched together.
Foundation stones vary from old stones marked with a toothed chisel to hunks of concrete added later. Although no longer in use, the current owners are aware of the historical significance of these early log structures.
In June 2015, I found these old log buildings while searching through Pike County. The morning light added interesting shadow shapes and stunning color. I completed the oil painting in my studio in August 2015, canvas size 16 x 24 inches.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
