David Best Log Barn

The terrain in Floyd County is full of knolls and valleys. The roads twist and turn through picturesque countryside, so finding this log barn was a pleasant adventure. It rests upon a gentle hill overlooking rolling pastures.

This barn looks ordinary on the outside, but step inside to see a truly unusual barn. There seems to be no recorded construction date for this barn. Features of this early double-crib barn include massive notched logs balanced upon large stone slabs dressed and placed for the foundation.

The exterior barn encloses the original log barn. Over the decades -possibly even centuries- this barn has been in use, including alterations to accommodate farming needs. It remains a rare treasure.

The day was hazy and threatening rain. The atmosphere softened the colors on the barn and also the surroundings. I sketched and photographed this barn taking special note of the delicate light and shadows. Using my notes, I completed a studio oil painting in January 2015; it is 18 x 30 inches.

All the barn paintings are for sale.  Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
