William Stumler Family Barn
High on a ridge between Indian Creek and Little Indian Cree this barn is a perfect addition to the rolling countryside and picturesque views. William Stumler purchased the land in 1907 and built this beautiful gable-roofed barn in 1908. The roof featured four substantial lightning rods, some with golden glass globes.
Mr. Stumler was industrious and used timbers from an even older barn that had been disassembled. Substantial sawmill-cut and hand-hewn timbers were used, some pegged, some notched, and a few later repairs were nailed. The hayloft was filled by means of a large hay door on a gable end. The hay door opened with a pulley system operated from the loft.
The main level had some dirt floor animal stalls and other areas with wide and thick plank flooring. The current owner, a Great Granddaughter of William, discovered termites had destroyed most of the posts and beams. The barn was beyond repair and was reluctantly torn down in October 2015.
Luckily, I had visited the farm in 2014 and spent a great deal of time sketching and photographing the barn. I completed a studio oil painting in January 2015. Canvas size 15 x 24 inches.
Since the painting of this structure, the barn has been destroyed.
