Drake Family Barn

Northern Sullivan County features fertile, fat farmland that also happens to provide the perfect spot for this barn to call home. The barn was built in 1936 or 1937, using Oak and Walnut harvested on the farm. The roof's peak is graced with five lightning rods, most still with their amber-colored glass globe decoration. One is topped with a wind vane. The ground level of the barn had multiple uses. In its heyday, fifteen milking stanchions were active seven days a week.

Today the barn is not used for cattle or dairy, but a lively family of Bassett Hounds calls it home. There is plenty of room for the storage of farm equipment, too. The late winter evening light flooded the side of the barn with a winter's glow. Since winter light is so short and the temperatures are cold, I often paint scenes like this in my studio. I chose a format size of 16 x 25 inches and completed the oil painting in January 2016.

All the barn paintings are for sale.  Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
