Fisher-Miles Hay Press Barn

John Fisher built the beautiful old brick home on this farm in 1854; the barn was built just before or during this same period of time. Restoration of the home and barn are ongoing.

This is a two-level barn made from hand-hewn and pegged timbers and logs. Some of the huge framing logs still have bark on them - over 150 years after construction. The barn is especially robust around the area where the hay press had been installed. Some of the timbers are as large as 20 x 12 inches. Because of the tremendous pressure and movement of a hay press in action, barns with hay presses required extra sturdy construction.

The hay press no longer exists in this barn. Only a few hay presses still exist; some give scheduled demonstrations throughout the year.

May 2009 presented a perfect day for plein air oil painting. I set up my easel very early to capture the morning light warmly glowing on the gable end. The north face stayed cloaked in cooler hues. Birds were active that day and requested recognition in the 18 x 24 inch painting.

All the barn paintings are for sale.  Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
