Kellems Family Barn
The Kellems family has owned their farm since 1879. This pegged timber-framed barn was built circa 1916. It is a three-bay barn with the center section banked three feet higher than the two outside bays.
The center bay features a large door on the north gable end visible in the painting. The center section was originally a pass-through, closed off at a later date.
The two outer bays on the main level have dirt floors and were used for livestock and for milking. The current family members are carefully restoring this farm, including the barn, the original stone home and a number of other significant structures.
After several visits to this farm and barn, I finally was able to complete an early morning plein air oil painting. The reflected light under the roof eaves was especially interesting. It was October 2008 and I chose an 18 × 24 inch canvas.
This barn painting made possible, in part, by the Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
