Rankin-Elliott Round Barn
The farm that holds this round barn has been in the same family for over 125 years. Rebecca Rankin added the barn in 1908.
This barn has two levels. The upper hayloft is open to the ground floor just inside the large doors. A hayfork on a circular rail attached to the roof eased the handling of hay when loading the loft. Other than the hay chute that extends from the ground floor to the cupola, the two-pitched gambrel roof is self-supporting. On the outside, the roof is decorated with an eye-pleasing pattern of interlocking shingles.
The rafter tails are gracefully sculpted, certainly displaying beauty beyond function. Louvered vents adorn the circular structure as well as the cupola. This historic barn is a very important part of the farm and family.
The late afternoon light displays a stunning arched shadow shape as the barn turns away from the light. Reflected light and color within the cast shadows always presents a surprise. One must see this to appreciate it. I set up my easel and did a plein air oil painting in August 2009, using a 16 x 20 inch canvas.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
