Kitchen-DuVall Round Barn
Elizabeth Kitchen built this beautiful round barn in 1906. It is a hidden treasure, secluded within the rich farmland along the Tippecanoe River north of Buffalo, Indiana. The barn has been kept in excellent condition. The roof structure is a marvel.
The barn was built with local native Oak timber. The Oak was bent and kiln dried to form the circular framework. Through the years the barn has evolved, but maintains much of its original interior structures.
As with many old barns, this one also has very interesting history. While the barn was in its planning stage, the farmer was killed in a farm-related accident. His wife, Elizabeth Kitchen, and their young son picked up the farming responsibilities, finished the barn and continued to farm. The barn is currently used for some hay and other storage.
It was a beautiful May afternoon 2009, when I set up and completed this plein air oil painting. The arched cast shadows and reflected light took time to capture. The Locust trees were in full bloom and added interest to the whole scene. I chose an 18 x 24 inch canvas.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
