Spring Creek Farm Barn

In 1891, Franklin Shuman acquired this farm in the beautifully rolling countryside of Whitley County. Research by family members dates this gambrel-roofed bank barn to around 1900 to 1916. It was built into the side of a hill on a substantial stone foundation.

It is a two-level barn of hand-hewn and pegged timbers. Several timbers measure 52 feet, unspliced. Over the years, additional outbuildings and farmhouses were built on the farm. It became an extended family farm, well-loved and very well-maintained when the farm was active.

This large barn remained the centerpiece of the farm and all farming activities revolved around it. Many family members reminisce with glee about hand-raising 4-H calves, baling hay and filling the barn with hay and straw. They have fond memories of playing basketball in the upper level.

Today the farm is quiet. The extended family hopes to restore their treasured barn. It was June 2011, when I positioned my oil painting easel uphill and proceeded to capture the late afternoon light as it pulsed through a full range of red hues in the light and in the shadows. I painted on a canvas size 12 x 24 inches.

Since the painting of this structure, the barn has been destroyed.

All the barn paintings are for sale.  Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
