Lain Homestead Barn
With old photos and handwritten notes, the Lain family traces back through time for a glimpse of their heritage, including the family farm and its old barn. Family records are carefully maintained. In fact, five generations of family and farm come alive through these photographs and notes.
This original old barn was built in 1875 with hand-hewn and pegged timbers. In 1905, the barn was moved about 500 feet to its current location. Later additions and changes were made to accommodate the evolutions in farming.
Until 1960, the barn was home for livestock and a dairy herd. At that time the farming operation was converted over to grain crops.
While talking with members of the Lain family, it became very clear how important this barn and farm is to the foundation of the family.
It was fall when I found this barn. The late daylight was intensifying the reds on the west side and muting the reds on the south end of the barn. I especially wanted to capture the cast shadow of the trees. Doing so adds much character to a barn painting and secures it in place. I sketched, took notes and photographed it in the brief evening light. Later, in January 2013, I completed the 18 x 24 inch oil painting in my studio.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
