Littleton-Kingen Round Barn
This 102-foot diameter barn is considered the largest round barn in the state of Indiana. Frank L. Littleton had it built in 1898. It had a 16-foot windmill at the top of the cupola that pumped water from a well located under the center of the barn. This was an unusual adaptation in round barns.
The three enormous levels of this barn added to its versatility over time. Even the hayloft is impressive, able to store up to 400 tons of hay. Unique ventilation shafts kept all three levels comfortable. The Kingen family has lived on the farm since 1906 and has kept this barn in excellent condition. Due to its large size, it is still very functional.
The fall light and color were spectacular on the day I set up my plein air supplies to complete an oil painting of this awesome barn. It was October 2010. I waited until the late afternoon light warmed the side of the barn and cast the crescent shaped shadow I so dearly wanted to capture. The barn picked a large canvas (18 x 36 inches) out of my carload of canvases.
Since the painting of this structure, the barn has been damaged.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
