McFadden Farm Stagecoach Barn
This barn is located in the beautiful rolling countryside of southwest Indiana. It was built in 1821, the year the farm was founded by Noah and Sarah McFadden. Many of the original pegged timbers remain, attesting to the durability of timber-frame construction.
The barn is unusual in structure with the gently sloping gable roof extending over a very large, open pass-through. The barn was used as a stagecoach stop.
This farm, with its multiple barns, is located on the old stagecoach road that connected Mount Vernon and New Harmony. During Indiana's early years, waterways were the fastest means of transportation. However, due to the geography in this area, it was much quicker to travel by land between these two points than it was to go the longer route by boat.
This barn is still in use today to house and care for horses. The farm has been in the McFadden family since it was founded.
I spent a lovely spring day with this barn and farm. It was April 2005. I waited until later in the afternoon to start the painting to capture the light and the perspective I wanted. I oil painted an 8 x 16 inch canvas and used it as a guide to complete a 24 x 48 inch canvas, which came later in my studio.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
