Roy R. Robbins Barn
Impressive from any angle outside, once you walk inside this barn the sense of expansive size and construction techniques amplify its significance. This three-level bank barn is located on a ridge following the nearby Sand Creek, which speaks to the fertility of the farmland surrounding this large old barn.
Huge quantities of massive hand-hewn and pegged timbers were needed for the construction. It is unique in its placement within the hillside and its multiple accesses.
Cut and dressed limestone were used to build the sturdy and striking foundation. Windows were placed along the upper edge to provide light for what was probably the original stable area. The barn's size can accommodate large farm machinery in the middle and upper levels.
The exterior has been covered over with tin, to further the longevity of this barn. In this case, the beauty is truly within. I sketched and photographed this barn in its impressive location on a cold fall day. Using my reference materials, I completed an 18 x 24 inch oil painting in my studio in April 2015.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
