Willman Brothers Farm Barn
Gently rolling and fertile hills surround this family farm. It has been in the Willman family since 1855. This barn was built in 1912-13.
The large timbers in the barn are hand-hewn and several are at least 40 feet in length. Extra time and effort went into building a functional yet eye-pleasing barn with decorative features.
A shed-roofed addition was added to the west gable end. It has a large pass-through opening visible in the painting.
On the beams above the pass-through are two wooden winches. The winches were hand made and were built sturdy enough to lift wagon beds off of the running gear. Many farms only had one set of good running gear and several beds. Examples include a flat bed to haul loose hay to the hayloft or wheat sheaves to the threshing machine, and a box bed for hauling loose grain, ear corn, gravel or dirt.
The winches were also used during the butchering process.
Surrounded by pasture now, this farm and barn is a peaceful and quiet place. The birds were singing and a gentle breeze occasionally ruffled the leaves of nearby trees while I worked on my plein air painting. It was May 2014. The oil painting is 18 x 24 inches.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
