Blackie Nixon Barn
This 1884 gable-roofed bank barn commands a natural ridgeline above a large bend in Coal Creek in east central Fountain County. The barn is positioned in such a way on the steep slope that a stacked stone-and-brick foundation on one side of the barn is quite high.
Built from large hand-hewn and pegged timbers, the barn also exhibits some later changes. The hayloft floor has planks measuring up to 19 inches in width.
Due to the vegetation surrounding this barn, I was unable to establish a position for my easel that wasn't hazardous. So I sketched and photographed this barn in early spring 2015. The reds on this barn were stunning and intense, especially within the shadow shapes. The light shining on the sculpted designs worked into the exterior, cast some very interesting shadow patterns. Later, using my gathered reference materials, I completed the oil painting; size 18 x 24 inches, in my studio in May 2015.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
