Calloway Family Round Barn
The Calloway barn is positioned to take advantage of the gently rolling land. The hillside was only slightly altered to accommodate the two wagon doors; only one is visible in the painting. Eight men worked one year to build the 80-foot diameter barn in 1914 and 1915.
The roof is decorated with four farm animals and diamond shapes designed within the roof shingles. The animals are a trotting horse facing north, a Hampshire hog facing east, a rooster facing south, and a Black Angus facing west. A ring of lightning rods with green-fluted glass globes is spaced on the gambrel ridge.
A wooden silo is located inside the main wagon doors. The remainder of the upper level is used for hay, straw and grain storage.
The lower level holds well-cared for animals including cows, calves and a number of very friendly draft horses.
I had the opportunity to visit this farm and the Calloway family on a number of occasions. It is such a plus to meet the dedicated and caring farm families from throughout our state.
I did a studio oil painting of this complicated scene. It was painted in January 2013 using sketches and photos taken earlier. Canvas size is 18 x 36 inches.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
