Colin Craig Barn

Near Wildcat Creek in Howard County, this striking barn sets in rich and rolling farmland.

Built in 1884, it is an exceptional cantilevered bank barn. The barn was built with hand-hewn and pegged Poplar timbers harvested on the farm. Three 50-foot beams, unspliced, are still in place in the lower level of the barn. The barn rests on a stone foundation.

An earthen ramp leads to a wagon door on the side of the barn. Inside, a ladder connects to the loft where a hay rail and fork are still in place.

In the mid 1900s, the barn was expanded. The old barn and the new section were combined and a very successful dairy operation ensued. The Craig family desires to maintain the integrity of this historic barn and has taken steps to restore and renovate as needed.

I stumbled upon this barn in August 2014 and then returned very early in the morning to capture the morning light dancing on the east gable end. It was a beautiful morning, a perfect day to oil paint outside. Canvas size 16 x 24 inches.

All the barn paintings are for sale.  Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
