Eaglefield-Hunt-Hein Barn

A significant gem for Clay County and For Indiana is the Eaglefield-Hunt-Hein farm and barn. Located on the extreme eastern edge of Clay County, it is positioned on the historic Old National Highway.

The farm is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Farm history states that Abraham Lincoln visited the farm during his travels between Illinois and Washington D.C.

William Eaglefield built the Greek Revival-style home in 1855. The large and stately barn came later; it was constructed in either 1878 or 1895. The barn is a stunning and unique treasure. It is three levels of careful construction, unusual design and elaborate trimmings. Roof supports, a unique cupola and decorations finish off the uncommon construction. Although not currently in use, it is well-maintained and treasured.

It was a cold November day in 2015 when I found this barn. The cast shadow of the nearby tree was an exciting plus to the scene. Green is unusual for a barn and the greens here vary slightly between cool and a bit warmer. The greens in the fall grasses are very warm and muted. I did a quick plein air sketch and photographed the barn. The oil painting was completed in my studio in June, 2016 on a canvas size 18 x 30 inches.

All the barn paintings are for sale.  Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
