Guthrie Family Barn
Three-gable barns like this one are very unusual. It has an earthen ramp approach and a bridge leading to the main level. Built in 1878, it is a three-level barn made from hand-hewn and pegged timbers. Time and a concerted effort went into making this uniquely beautiful barn. Details such as the Gothic-styled vents on all four sides, the sculpted trim around the windows, the entry area enhanced with the ramped approach, and the added gable over the entrance give this barn an air of importance.
In a historic photo, a windmill was also part of the barn, adding to its efficiency. It was later removed. The Guthries acquired the farm in 1915. It was used for cattle and horses and then later for a herd of Holsteins. Beyond that the barn's history remains a mystery.
After several attempts of painting this barn, I finally succeeded in capturing its quiet beauty. I set up my oil painting supplies early one morning in October 2010. The early morning light on the barn was stunning. My painting day was abruptly interrupted, but I was able to complete most of the painting on location. Later, I finished the painting in my studio, on a 12 x 18 inch canvas.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
