Jerome Schroeder Family Barn

This unusual log barn was built around 1861 by Jerome Schroeder's ancestors. Located on a hillside, this barn has a spectacular view of the surrounding countryside. It represents a style of log barn unique to this area. The logs are hand-hewn and notched together. It appears the barn was originally sided with vertical planks in various widths. The barn remains very solid.

Even though the barn was used for cattle and other livestock through its many years, it also served another very important function. The family tradition was to hold wedding dances in the barn. Coming from a family of eleven, Jerome attended many family celebrations in this barn.

Jerome and his new bride, Joanne, had their wedding celebration inside this barn in 1949. The story goes that many a keg of beer rolled in and out of the barn during these family festivities!

Meeting Jerome and Joanne was the highlight of my trip to Dubois County. They were so kind, humorous and very excited about having their treasured barn recorded on canvas. I set up my oil painting supplies late in the day in October 2006. The painting is 14 x 18 inches. The whole day has become a fond memory.

All the barn paintings are for sale.  Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
