Haimbaugh Farms Inc., Round Barn
This spectacular round barn is a real treasure for Fulton County. It is the largest round barn in the county, build in 1914.
It is a pass-through barn. The pass-through area cuts the circle of milking stanchions into two half circles. Milk from this dairy traveled as far as Chicago.
The pass through allowed access to the hayloft. The hay was forked and lifted into the loft with a pulley system. The long rope on the pulley was attached to a horse. When the hayfork was loaded and ready, the horse was guided away from the barn pulling the hay up to the loft. Members of the family recollect their job of guiding the workhorse away from and then back to the barn during hay making time.
The Haimbaugh family has always been close. Every year they hold a family reunion on the farm. Their round barn is a central part of the family and is enjoyed during these annual family celebrations. The barn is glue that helps hold the family together. The farm has been in the Haimbaugh family since April 1864.
Fortunately for me, I was able to meet many family members during one of their annual events. What a treasured memory. I set up my plein air supplies and completed an oil painting in May 2008. I used a large canvas, 18 x 36 inches. The barn demanded it.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
