Manly’s Barn
This stately 1860s bank barn is the centerpiece of this horse farm. Hand-hewn and pegged timber-frame construction sets atop a Sturdy Stone foundation; this barn was built to last and to function superbly. On the hot summer day I did this painting, July 2007, the barn was very cool and comfortable. According to the owner it is also warm and cozy in the winter. The upper level is used for hay and grain storage.
Years ago, the lower level was used for milking dairy cattle. Stalls for workhorses and stout ponies were also in this area. Today the lower level is divided into roomy stalls for horses.
The stable is home to a variety of well-tended horses, one of which is a horse named Manly. He is retired from the circus. In his cool stable, Manly was curled up like a kitten, but he quickly woke up to gather our attention.
Manly was very curious and continually checked on my progress throughout the morning. He would poke his head out of the stall doorway to see where I was. I captured him in the 16 x 20 inch oil painting.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
