Max Schultz Barn
This three-and-a-half level barn is positioned on a slight hillside with an attractive and sturdy fieldstone foundation. It is a three-bay barn built from pegged mill-cut timbers. The date of construction is unknown, but is presumed to be in the early 1900s. The farm is located within or near the boundaries of what was called the Grand Kankakee Marsh. The Kankakee River was dredged in the early 1900s, draining the marsh, which opened up large areas of rich soil for farming.
The barn was altered over time for the changing needs on the farm. It was used for horses, hogs, farrowing and for milking dairy cattle.
Capturing mood and character on the canvas was one of my main goals. This barn evoked a quiet and pensive mood and the dawn light accentuated it, just what I wanted. It was Labor Day 2009; I set up my oil painting supplies and completed an 18 x 24 inch canvas.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
