McCain-Mears Barn

Carroll County is fortunate to have this barn treasure within its boundaries. The family believes the barn was built around 1862. It is cantilevered bank barn. The beautifully cut stone foundation, visible on the all sides, is still serving well.

The lower cantilevered side, or stable side, was purposefully positioned to face east. Barns oriented thus provide much more protection from the cold winds and also gathered the warm morning sun.

The hand-hewn and pegged-timber frame was constructed with strength in mind. Two beautiful large cupolas grace the roof's ridge. The upper level, where hay, straw and grain were kept, has multiple louvered vents on each side and on the gable ends. This provided considerable ventilation.

The Mears family acquired the farm and barn in 1948 and has continued to live in the 1852 home. They have used the barn for many years.

I had the fortunate opportunity to visit at length with the barn owners the day I set up my easel to do this oil painting. It was a perfect late afternoon with long light touching the west side and gable end. The cast shadows glowed with reflected light. The canvas size is 18 x 30 inches.

All the barn paintings are for sale.  Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
