Vera Evelyn Deckard Barn
Driving the winding grass-filled lane up to this barn is a peaceful pleasure.
Many barns in the southern part of Indiana are unpainted and this barn is one of them. The unpainted siding develops a beautiful patina over time. According to the date carved into the door, the barn was built in 1884; next to the date are the initials E.K. The barn is pegged but the timbers are not hand-hewn. Some of the areas of the barn have been altered and repaired through time.
The center bay is higher in elevation than the two outside bays. Stout boards measuring up to thirteen inches in width comprise the floor of the center aisle. The two outside lower bays are stables and have dirt floors. Two partial haylofts provided the needed storage for hay and straw. A hay rail with a hayfork is still visible in the peak of the barn.
Plein air sketches and photographs gathered in the summer of 2012 provided the references needed for the studio painting in oil, size 15 x 24 inches, which was completed in December 2012.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
