Otte-Webster Family Barn
Records on this barn are extensive since the barn has been in the Otte family since Johann Wilhelm Hienrick Otte constructed it in 1870. It has gone through many changes over time to reflect the trends in their farming operation.
The old barn steps down a steep grade providing not only a variety of uses, but also a visually interesting barn. Additions and changes were made to the barn over time. Yellow Poplar was harvested on the farm and the lumber replaced the original barn siding. Care was taken to recut the same vent patterns in the gable end.
In the early 1900s, during a period of limited water supply, the family utilized a spring for their water needs. A pipeline from a water spring one-quarter mile away kept a cement tank on their farm filled with water.
This barn is now owned by Mr. Otte's great-great-granddaughter and is still in use today.
In the fall of 2010, I found this barn treasure and set up my oil painting easel with a 16 x 20 inch canvas. The colors and the reflected light within the shadows were a joy to paint. The cattle continued to rest in the foreground shade while I painted.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
