Spiher-Martin Family Barn

This bank barn is strategically placed on the side of a hill overlooking the rolling countryside of northwest St. Joseph County. The big red barn is a timber-framed forebay bank barn. It was built in 1881. An earlier barn on the farm had burned and some of the salvaged timbers, along with replacement Oak and Walnut timbers, were used in the construction of this beauty. The original home, built in 1855, remains as another prominent feature on this lovely old farm.

Tall and narrow arched louvered vents grace all four sides. Function was obviously considered for ventilation, but a strong emphasis was placed on a visually pleasing design and thoughtful placement of the vents. The round windows added a very unique and personal touch. The circular design is repeated in trim.

In 2009, the owners carefully restored the barn to its former beauty, all except the original cupola. The striking barn is carefully maintained.

I visited this barn on several occasions, but waited until late November 2010 to complete a plein air oil painting. I wanted the long light of late afternoon with fall colors. I chose a 12 x 24 inch canvas with its horizontal format.

All the barn paintings are for sale.  Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
