Spiker-Fitzgerald Log Barn
Nestled between two wooded ridges and place along a small stream, this old log barn rests in a beautiful little valley in southern Indiana. At approximately 28 x 56 feet and built of logs, this type of barn is called a crib barn.
The shed-roofed area, added to the backside, was built later and is not constructed of logs. Located in the east gable end, near the peak, is a board with the date of 1910 marked upon it. It is believed that Les Spiker, the original owner of the property, built the barn that year.
The barn is divided into three sections. The outer two sections are log cribs; the middle section shares a common roof, but is open. This layout and style makes it a double-crib barn.
Late fall with its explosion of color is an exciting time to oil paint, I set up my easel early one morning in November 2008. The morning light adds so much mood and character to a scene. Short days require fast paintings. I painted on a canvas 12 x 24 inches. Vines have wrapped around the logs adding interesting curves.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
