Thompson-Whited Round Barn

Coal Creek meanders about and then ties into the Wabash River in the northwest corner of Parke County. Near this confluence is the home of a round barn considered to be the firs truly round barn built in Indiana. Records differ; it is stated that it was built between 1888 and 1891 or possibly 1895. Whichever is true, this is a very early round barn.

Unlike many other barns, this one has horizontal siding of narrow Poplar boards bent to curve around the structure. Although no longer in use, the barn and farm are cherished and maintained.

When I found a barn to add to my project, it was obvious because the barn would instantly grab me. This one was no exception. The time I spent with this barn and its owners will always be a treasured memory. This project has enriched my life. It took several days of study to decide which angle and lighting were going to be the best for a painting. I settled upon a late afternoon because the light streamed across the field and then up onto the barn.

The horizontal siding added interesting texture to the oil painting. I started the 18 x 30 inch canvas on location and then finished in my studio in January 2016.

All the barn paintings are for sale.  Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
