Truex Family Barn
Ancestors of Julie Truex established this 217-acre farm in 1860. In 1960 the farm qualified for and received the Indiana Homestead Centennial Award.
This is a three-bay raised barn sturdily built of hand-hewn and pegged timbers on a stone foundation. It was built soon after the farm was established in 1860.
The earthen approach connects to the center bay of the barn through two large wagon doors. These two doors are decorated with painted white arches on a red barn.
This type of decoration is generally isolated to northwestern Ohio and northeastern Indiana. Through these painted doors, the wagons could enter the center bay and unload hay into the other two bays. The lower level housed the workhorses used on this farm as well as other farm animals. Currently the barn is used for storage.
It was late fall in 2012, when I found this lovely barn. I prepared sketches and notes on location and photographed the barn. In January 2013, I completed an oil painting in my studio. The canvas size is 18 x 24 inches.
All the barn paintings are for sale. Please contact Gwen to find out if the painting(s) you are interested in are sold or available.
